What are TED Talks?

Here at iGina we’ve long been big fans of TED talks, and with increasing popularity. We’ve been asked this last week by a client, what are TED Talks, and what’s the fuss?

So in this quick roundup edition, we’ll talk you through the TED Talk concept and share with you our very top favorite talks.

What are TED Talks?

TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.

In simple TED talks as you probably guessed are talks!

But what makes it unique?  TED stands for Technology, entertainment, design. TED talks are short talks given on any topic which is limited to a maximum of 18 minutes. This gives the speaker just 18 minutes to tell their story, promote their idea, capture minds, and leave a lasting thought.

The talks are filmed and are freely available via the TED website and YouTube.  (so go ahead and watch some of them and get inspired!)

TED Talk Roots

The concept started in the 1980’s, with the first-ever conference in 1984. It’s a different way to educate people on an idea and the concept of TED now creeps through boardrooms, conferences, and lecture halls across the globe.

TED’s mantra is ideas worth spreading.

And here at iGina, we love it!

Why are TED Talks so popular?

When TED looks for speakers they look for engaging, charismatic speakers whose talks expose new ideas that are supported by concrete evidence and are relevant to a broad, international audience. They have captured some very famous faces to the stage at TED HQ including Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Bono, Jane Goodall, Malcolm Gladwell, Gordon Brown, Richard Dawkins Mike Rowe, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Vint Cerf.
